Lighting

In most of the UK's modern properties, the circuits used in lighting are usually distinct from the ring main circuit. Often, houses have two different lighting circuits which have protection through either a 5A fuse or 6A trip located in the consumer unit.

The lighting circuit of a property is different from that of the ring main in that it won't create a loop that returns to the consumer unit. It instead connects the unit to the first light, which then in turn, will connect to the second. This process continues around the property.

Cables are earth rated for up to 12A for lighting in domestic situations, containing neutral, live and earth wires inside its casing. This cable then leads from the appliance to any specific lighting locations on walls or ceilings.

If the switch is mounted on a wall, then the box can either be attached into the wall itself, or perhaps as a surface-mounted fixture. With older lighting installations, the cable is usually often passed through the junction box that is particular to that light. The box itself is located under the property floorboards or in-between joists in the ceiling that are close to the switch. With fluorescent lights, any lighting systems that do not use a ceiling rose connection must have junction box connections.
